Fresh vs tested zones: counting revisits after departure

Direct answer

A zone is usually called fresh when price has not returned to it since leaving it, and tested once price has come back into it. Count revisits only after the departure: the first return is itself a test, so a zone is fresh only until the moment price touches it again. Freshness is a bookkeeping label, not a probability; it does not make a reaction more or less likely on its own.

Scope: This guide shows a consistent way to count revisits on a chart. It does not estimate the chance that a zone will hold, and it does not claim to see unfilled or hidden orders.

Base
The compact group of candles that the zone is drawn around.
Departure
The candle or candles that move clearly away from the base. Counting starts after this.
Revisit
A return into the zone after at least one candle that stayed fully outside it.
Fresh / tested
Zero revisits so far / one or more revisits so far.

Side by side: example and counterexample

Synthetic example: zone with zero revisitsSynthetic candles form a base between 30 and 36, then depart upward. Through the end of the chart, no later low comes back to 36, so the revisit count is zero.Synthetic data, not a real marketZone 30 to 36BaseDeparturePullback stays above zone
Synthetic example: zone with zero revisits. Synthetic candles form a base between 30 and 36, then depart upward. Through the end of the chart, no later low comes back to 36, so the revisit count is zero. Hollow bodies close up; filled bodies close down. Candles are numbered from 1.
Counterexample: same zone, two revisitsSame base and departure. Candle 9 drops to 34, inside the zone, which is the first revisit and already a test. Price leaves, then candle 12 drops to 33 for a second revisit.Synthetic data, not a real marketZone 30 to 36Revisit 1 (already tested)Revisit 2

What to inspect: observation vs inference

  1. 1. Where does the departure end?
    Observation

The last candle of the move away from the base.

    Inference

Candles inside the departure do not count as revisits.

  2. 2. Did any later candle enter the zone?
    Observation

Compare each later low (for demand) or high (for supply) with the zone edge.

    Inference

The first entry makes the zone tested. It is no longer fresh from that candle on.

  3. 3. Was price outside between entries?
    Observation

Look for at least one candle fully outside the zone between touches.

    Inference

Consecutive candles inside the zone are one revisit, not several.

  4. 4. How were the zone edges drawn?
    Observation

Note whether edges use wicks or bodies.

    Inference

Different drawing rules change the count. Pick one rule and keep it.

What this cannot tell you

  • A fresh label only says price has not come back yet. It carries no information about how likely a reaction is.
  • Order books are not visible on a price chart, so claims about remaining or hidden orders are not testable here.
  • Zone edges are drawn by a person. Two learners may count the same chart differently if their edges differ.

Common mistakes

Calling a zone fresh during its first revisit.
The first touch is the test. From that candle, the zone is tested.
Counting candles in the departure as touches.
Start counting only after the departure has finished.
Treating fresh as 'more likely to hold'.
Freshness alone is a count, not a probability. Study outcomes separately if needed.
Counting every candle inside the zone as a separate test.
A revisit needs price to leave the zone before the next entry.

Practice

After a clean departure, price returns into a demand zone for three consecutive candles, then rallies away without leaving and re-entering in between. How many revisits is that?

Use the counting rule from this guide: a new revisit needs at least one candle fully outside the zone first.
