Price and volume together: nonconfirmation is not OBV divergence

Direct answer

Raw price-volume nonconfirmation means price makes a new high (or low) while the volume bar on that candle is smaller than at the earlier extreme. OBV divergence is a different comparison: on-balance volume is a running total, so it can make a new high even when the latest bar is smaller. Neither one forces a reversal, and in most forex data the volume shown is tick activity, not traded contracts.

Scope: This guide separates two comparisons that are often merged. It gives no direction calls and makes no claim that either pattern predicts what comes next.

Raw volume bar
The volume printed for one candle.
Nonconfirmation
A new price extreme whose own volume bar is lower than the bar at the previous extreme.
OBV
On-balance volume: adds a candle's volume when it closes up, subtracts it when it closes down, and keeps a running total.
Tick volume
A count of price updates, common in decentralised markets such as spot forex, used as a proxy for activity.

Side by side: example and counterexample

Synthetic example: higher high on a smaller volume barSynthetic candles make a high of 60 on candle 5 with a volume bar of 80, then a higher high of 64 on candle 10 with a volume bar of 46. The chart ends there; the outcome is not shown.Synthetic data, not a real marketHigh 60, volume 80High 64, volume 46
Synthetic example: higher high on a smaller volume bar. Synthetic candles make a high of 60 on candle 5 with a volume bar of 80, then a higher high of 64 on candle 10 with a volume bar of 46. The chart ends there; the outcome is not shown. Hollow bodies close up; filled bodies close down. Candles are numbered from 1.
Counterexample: OBV rises and price continuesThe same synthetic candles with on-balance volume drawn below. Although the bar at candle 10 is smaller than at candle 5, OBV is higher at candle 10. Two further candles close above the candle 10 high.Synthetic data, not a real marketSmaller bar, OBV higherPrice continues
Counterexample: OBV rises and price continues. The same synthetic candles with on-balance volume drawn below. Although the bar at candle 10 is smaller than at candle 5, OBV is higher at candle 10. Two further candles close above the candle 10 high. Hollow bodies close up; filled bodies close down. Candles are numbered from 1.

What to inspect: observation vs inference

  1. 1. Which volume series is this?
    Observation

Check whether the data source reports traded volume or tick volume.

    Inference

Tick volume tracks activity, not size. Compare it within the same source only.

  2. 2. Which comparison am I making?
    Observation

Raw bar against raw bar, or OBV value against OBV value.

    Inference

They can disagree, as the counterexample shows. Name the one you used.

  3. 3. Is the volume level unusual for this time of day?
    Observation

Compare with the same session on earlier days.

    Inference

A small bar during a quiet session may be normal rather than meaningful.

  4. 4. What did price do afterwards?
    Observation

Record later closes without assuming a reversal.

    Inference

Nonconfirmation can be followed by continuation, a range, or a reversal.

What this cannot tell you

  • The figures are synthetic. Values were chosen to make the two comparisons disagree on purpose.
  • Neither nonconfirmation nor OBV divergence forces a reversal; both describe the past only.
  • Tick volume from different brokers can differ, so comparisons across sources are unreliable.

Common mistakes

Calling a smaller bar at a new high an OBV divergence.
OBV is cumulative. Check the OBV values themselves.
Expecting a reversal after any nonconfirmation.
Treat it as context. The counterexample continues higher.
Reading forex tick volume as exchange volume.
Tick volume counts price updates. Label it clearly in notes.
Comparing volume across different sessions without adjustment.
Compare like with like, such as the same session on prior days.

Practice

Price prints a higher high on a smaller raw volume bar, but OBV also makes a higher high. Which statement is most accurate?

Separate the raw-bar comparison from the OBV comparison before choosing.
